Your Energy Bill and the Winter Months

Staff • Jan 10, 2020

Well it’s official, weather and all, winter is here! With that comes the cold chill outside mixed with random snow and ice storms.

We want to feel nice and warm in our home during this time, but many of us don’t like seeing such a large energy bill as well. There are some things you can do during these chilly months to keep your energy bill low, while staying warm, let’s review.

Utilize a free heating source, the Sun!
During the day, open any curtains that get sunlight. Get the help from the sun to naturally warm your home, but just be sure to close them in the evening. This will help reduce the chill coming from your cold windows.

Speaking of Cold Windows….
Do you have cold, drafty windows in your house? While replacing them with energy efficient ones is always a great idea, that may not be in the budget. Instead, purchase thermal-insulating curtains. These curtains will help reduce the amount of heat your home needs, so in the end it will also lengthen the lifespan of your heating unit.

Let’s continue with those Drafty Windows…
Besides purchasing thermal-insulating curtains, another easy and cheap repair would be to re-caulk around your windows and doors, and also add weather stripping. These simple tasks can be done in only a few hours and will help your energy bill tremendously.

Can you handle a little bit of cold?
There is no better way to reduce your energy bill than by adjusting the temperature. If you can handle bundling up with blankets while at home, then drop your temperature a bit. Energy.gov reports that if you turn your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for just 8 hours a day, you can save as much as 10% in your heating bill.

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again…
Scheduling regular service for your heating unit, will not only help extend its life, but will also help it work better and help keep costs down. By having your heating unit serviced regularly, it will also help reduce any unknown expensive issues because we will be able to catch them sooner and have them fixed before they get worse. If you haven’t had your heating unit serviced lately, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We hope these simple changes and adjustments will help you save big on your energy bill. Should you need any heating service or repair, contact us today !
